Verlander loses no-hitter in 7th, Ks 12

(AP Photo/Eric Christian Smith)

HOUSTON (AP) As Houston's Justin Verlander flirted with a no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox, he took a moment to scan the seats behind home plate to see whether childhood idol Nolan Ryan, who threw a record seven no-hitters, was watching from his usual seat behind the plate.

After throwing two no-hitters in his career, Verlander thought to himself that it would be "pretty cool" if Ryan was there to see it if he joined him in the exclusive group of players who have tossed at least three.

Ryan was at the game, but it wasn't to be.

Frazier hits 2 homers, German wins 9th

BALTIMORE (AP) The New York Yankees have climbed into first place in the AL East in spite of a myriad of injuries and partially because the front end of their schedule is loaded with games against the Baltimore Orioles.

Clint Frazier homered twice and had a career-high five RBIs, Gary Sanchez contributed a three-run drive and the Yankees kept up their assault on Baltimore pitching in an 11-4 rout Tuesday night.

A's win 5th straight, put DH Davis on IL

CLEVELAND (AP) Khris Davis' injury isn't getting better. The Athletics won't let it get any worse.

Oakland's slugger was placed on the injured list after the A's extended their winning streak to five games with a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night. Pinch-hitter Mark Canha replaced Davis in the third inning and connected on a two-run homer off struggling Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer (4-3), who hung around for six innings despite early wildness.

Dodgers win 15th in row behind Kershaw

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers just keep winning when Clayton Kershaw is on the mound.

Kershaw took a shutout into the seventh inning in his first start at Tropicana Field and the Los Dodgers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3 on Tuesday night. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner (4-0) wound up allowing two runs, six hits, one walk and had eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Baez pinch-hit single in 9th lifts Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) The heart of the Chicago Cubs' lineup, including a taped-up Javier Baez, proved to be too much for the Philadelphia Phillies and their tired bullpen.

Baez's pinch-hit single capped a two-run, ninth-inning rally and lifted the Cubs over Philadelphia 3-2 on Tuesday night to stop the Phillies' four-game winning streak.

Hosmer 2-run HR off Greinke lifts Padres

SAN DIEGO (AP) Eric Hosmer didn't wait to jump on Zack Greinke when he got a pitch to hit.

Hosmer's two-run, opposite-field home run off Greinke highlighted the three-run sixth inning that carried the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.

Panik's walk-off hit caps Giants' rally

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Joe Panik was fairly calm in the midst of his eight-pitch battle with Atlanta closer Luke Jackson. A pair of stolen bases earlier in the ninth inning, including one by pinch-runner Mac Williamson that put the winning run in scoring position, helped take the pressure off the Giants leadoff hitter.

Panik hit a game-ending two-run single off Jackson with two outs in the ninth to lift the San Francisco Giants to a 4-3 win over the Braves on Tuesday night.

Marquez quiets Pirates as Rockies roll

PITTSBURGH (AP) German Marquez could sense his delivery speeding up. So the Colorado Rockies pitcher made a concerted effort to slow things down, putting a halt to his team's four-game losing streak in the process.

The 24-year-old struck out seven over eight dominant innings in a 5-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night, never allowing a runner to third base while giving up three hits and just one walk.

Texas' Kelley gets save after good news

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Gutty pitching performances came in different sizes for the Texas Rangers in their 5-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

Lance Lynn allowed two runs over seven innings and Shawn Kelley earned the save hours after learning that two lumps removed from his throat last week were benign.
